San Mateo, CA – San Mateo County Libraries now offer library users free access to the popular on-demand film streaming service Kanopy as of January 5, 2018. With a San Mateo County library card, patrons can easily stream and enjoy more than 30,000 of the world’s best films, including award-winning documentaries, rare and hard-to-find titles, film festival favorites, indie and classic films, and world cinema.

In adding this service, San Mateo County Libraries enhances its collection of electronic media by incorporating more films of unique social and cultural value; films that are often difficult or impossible to access elsewhere, and programming that features diversity, with a wide array of foreign language films and films on race, and current affairs. Moreover, Kanopy is also compatible for hearing- (with captions and transcripts) and visually-impaired patrons (compatible with technologies such as JAWS).

"San Mateo County Libraries is committed to delivering an easily accessible and rich online experience to our communities. We are thrilled to be able to continue to expand access through Kanopy's video streaming platform," says Director of Library Services Anne-Marie Despain.

Kanopy is available to patrons that live in the San Mateo County Libraries service area (Atherton, Belmont, Brisbane, East Palo Alto, Foster City, Half Moon Bay, Millbrae, Pacifica, Portola Valley, San Carlos, Woodside, and the unincorporated areas of San Mateo County). San Mateo County library card holders from these locations can access Kanopy and sign up to start streaming films instantly by going to: smcl.org/kanopy
