Building Partnerships
APA and YMCA
APA's Family Support Center (FSC) is now providing services and running programs at the Chinatown YMCA. The address is 855 Sacramento Street (between Grant and Stockton). The FSC's office is located in Room 106 with the administrative office located upstairs.

In this partnership, funded by First 5, Department of Children, Youth and Families, and the Human Services Agency, APA family resource center programs are being held in YMCA's various meeting rooms. Larger facilities mean APA can have larger capacity to serve more. These programs include Discovery Land, Early Literacy Children's Book Club and Lending Library, Women Support Group, Parent Education Class. We will be able to host our Chinatown Thanksgiving Fun Day and agency wide APA Family Holiday Party in the auditorium/gym. This model of partnership will allow our families to have full YMCA memberships that provide access to recreation, family activity, afterschool and other programs in the evenings and on weekends. For some families living in very tight quarters, the YMCA can act as Chinatown's living room with a wide array of additional family supportive services. Memberships are an added cost, but Urban Fam, APA's young professionals volunteer group, have stepped up to raise the funds for this innovative model.

Community Center Grand Opening on September 14
The opening of the Visitacion Valley Community Center at 66 Raymond Avenue was marked by a ribbon cutting event with the Mayor, Supervisor Cohen, Dr. Maria Su of Department of Children, Youth and Families, Shireen McFadden of the Department of Aging and Adult Services, and other agency officials. The event was conducted with great fanfare and recognition, including APA as the Master Tenant of the facility. Self-Help for the Elderly runs their senior meal program there on weekdays. Additional community services are provided by another tenant, Asian Pacific American Community Center (APACC). More recreation and youth services will be provided in the coming months. Along with the adjacent 50 Raymond property, APA is responsible for a key recreational and service campus in Visitacion Valley.

Client Success
Tim, a 52-year-old restaurant worker from China, suffered a debilitating stroke at work 6 months after he had gotten a clean bill of health from his physical checkup. First sent to CPMC's Emergency Room, he then spent ten days in their ICU, unable to talk or walk and with impaired vision.

He was only married three years to a recent immigrant -- a woman in her early thirties. Both of them spoke only Cantonese. Isolated due to a lack of extended family in the area and the language barrier, and with an 18-month-old son plus a baby on the way, Tim and his young family seriously needed help. Find out more about this success story, please click here.

APA/API Back to School Health Event
BEE Smart! BEE Healthy! Workshop on September 17 at APA's main office in Chinatown attracted a great turnout of 96 families. The majority of the participants at this outreach event are new and potential clients. Backpacks and school supply kits were handed out along with children books, oral health kits, tote bags, and water bottles.

California Department of Public Health staff was on hand to inform the community about environmental health and the Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) Project. APA staff provided flyers and information for our community outreach projects – healthy fish consumption, PG&E's new residential rate, household safe cleaning and maintenance.
