BREAKING THE SILENCE

October was Domestic Violence Awareness Month. On October 24, 26 and 27 one hundred plus visitors signed in at our domestic violence awareness exhibition See DV "Inside Out". Domestic violence often occurs alongside child abuse. "Days Through Tomorrow," a video that we have produced as a Child Abuse Education and Advocacy Project, was screened at this multi-media exhibit. A visitor listens to audio recordings of verbal abuse scenarios while another snaps a picture of the display to share on WeChat. Each t-shirt hung on the clothesline of our version of the Clothesline Project at the exhibit shows information about domestic violence on children. In a video segment of "Days Through Tomorrow," clients share their experience of domestic violence and the impact it has on their emotions and lives.

Be A Hero Award

San Francisco Hep B Free - Bay Area celebrated its 11th Annual Be A Hero Awards Gala & Fundraiser, themed Together We Can on October 19. Our own Board Chair, Rose Chung, was one of four awardees to receive the Be A Hero Award (and superhero cape). The Gala was held at The InterContinental San Francisco. Rose used Facebook Fundraisers to appeal to her network and receive donations for this cause.

Please join Urban Fam (APA's young professional group) for craft cocktails and live jazz. Drink proceeds will go towards this Toy Drive. Our goal is to raise $10,000 to purchase 500 toys/gifts. Donations of new, unwrapped toys are also welcome.

Run/Walk for Physical & Mental Wellness Saturday, March 3, 2019 at 8 am, Year of the Pig 2019 Chinese New Year 5K/10K Run/Walk. Registration is now being accepted. Fee: $38 till December 31, and $43 January 1 - February 24. 

 

This is a first: the funds raised through your participation will directly support APA's physical and mental wellness programs for our clients. Even though this is a fundraiser for Chinatown YMCA, we will be benefited from runners who register through APA (Details to come). November 27 is GIVING TUESDAY Started in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation as a response to commercialization and consumerism in the post-Thanksgiving season (Black Friday, Cyber Monday), the Tuesday after Thanksgiving has since become a global day dedicated to giving back. It is a different way to get into the holiday spirit.

 

Here are examples of the ways in which your donation, any time of the year, can impact APA:

• $50 - A child receives backpack & supplies for school readiness and success
• $100 - Provides 1 session of Accelerated ESL Class for new immigrant families  
• $250 - Provide 4 sessions of case management to a Domestic Violence family
• $350 - Supports 1 month of parent-child interactive group

UPCOMING EVENTS  Holidays

The 7th Annual Healthy Thanksgiving on November 17 in Visitacion Valley is sponsored by Sutter Health CPMC. Kids will receive CPMC Teddy Bears at their booth.

APA's Visitacion Valley Strong Families and River of Life Church are the hosting partners. This Thanksgiving party is open to the public from 11 am - 4 pm at 1430 Sunnydale Ave.

A traditional Thanksgiving meal will be served. Many community resource agencies will be there. Activities include a petting zoo, face painting, rock climbing wall and much more.

Thanksgiving Event For Chinatown Clients will be held at APA's main offices on November 17. 40-50 families will be invited to a  Thanksgiving lunch with children activities and games. This is an opportunity to outreach and inform attendees of community resources and our programs that are helpful to them.

APA Families Holiday Party on December 16 is an agency-wide event at the Chinatown YMCA. Some clients from our Visitacion Valley and Excelsior family support centers will be attending also. Volunteer opportunities are available to help with set up, photography, children activities, food serving, and clean up.

To make the holidays a little brighter, each child will receive an age-appropriate toy or gift provided by our non-profit partners, donors, or purchased with funds raised from our Toy Drive Happy Hour. For the children who are unable to attend, the presents will be gifted at a later date through their parents.
