April is National Month of the Young Child. As part of the Chinatown FRC Collaborative, we are joining Wu Yee Children’s Services and Gum Moon Women’s Residence/Asian Women’s Resource Center to present an invitation-only Week of the Young event. This year’s theme is “Bring Your Furry Friend to Story Time!” celebrating early learning, young children, their teachers and families. Activities include children’s songs, storytelling, and art projects.

Supporting Women...

Supporting Women Today, Tomorrow, and Beyond is a 4-day workshop intended to be an uplift for clients who are domestic violence survivors, but it also benefited other clients. Participants learned how to stay positive and relaxed. This is just in time for Stress Awareness Month in April.

Topics for each day were: Mindfulness Yoga; Self-Care and Self-Love; Financial Workshop & Safety Planning; Dance & Destress. These one-hour workshops were held on Mar. 29, 30, 31, and Apr. 1.

Over 60 attended Comerica Bank's financial literacy presentation which addressed the importance of women obtaining financial skills and understanding the role that finances play in domestic violence. For DV clients, financial literacy is a tool for survivors to regain their independence and security. And for non-DV participants, it’s good info to know for financial safety planning in case of an emergency or unexpected death.

The Dance & Destress workshop had 40+ participants. Our UC Berkeley college intern led the group on dance steps and stretches.

Positive Parenting Program (Triple P). Our Excelsior family center is offering a curriculum-based Triple P course in Chinese. In this online class, parents with children 2-12 years old will learn how to use a positive approach to interact with their child; how to build a better parent-child relationship by understanding their child; and will be given tools to help them gain confidence in reducing their children’s misbehaviors.

Mondays & Thursdays, Apr. 12 - May 20, 1:30 - 2:30 pm

Show Us Your Talent

This family fun virtual talent show on Mar. 26 was presented via live broadcast on Instagram. The event is an APA Visitacion Valley Strong Families collaboration with HOPE SF Community Wellness Program, primarily for the Sunnydale housing residents. Eight contestants showed off their talents and passion in their high energy dance moves, while two others delivered stellar performances in their soulful singing.

Navigating the Smartphone

The digital literacy Smartphone Workshop Series concluded successfully on Mar. 26. Each of the four sessions had an average of 60 participants. They learned about multiple functions of the smartphone and were able to implement many of the features applicable in their daily lives during the sessions.

We handed out certificates of completion for the Smartphone Workshops to attendees at the entrance of our 10 Nottingham Place offices and provided gift bags of essential cares supplies for them to take home as well. The Pokemon gift bags are donated by The Pokemon Company International.

In Gratitude

We are very grateful for the donations of personal alarms for safety from Comerica and other organizations.

Our thanks to Harry Eng of the Rotary Club of Peninsula Starlight for donating 1,500 (3 cases) of 100% cotton, antimicrobial, multi-layered face masks. Our appreciation to Vanita Louie of the Rotary Club of SF Chinatown for coordinating the pickup of the items with our staff.

Thanking Tiffany Liu of DSPTCH for her donation of 55 bags in assorted styles.

More Bay Area counties are now in the orange tier and more people have been vaccinated. To keep everybody safe, however, we should continue to mask up properly, wash our hands frequently, and observe physically distancing.

Stay well,

Rick Yuen, Executive Director
