May 2021 Issue
Dear AAPIP Community,
Eid Mubarak and Happy Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month!
We hope that as philanthropy engages with AAPI communities more deeply this month - from learning about the severe underinvestment in AAPI communities to the “model minority” myth and stark wealth inequality to developing more comprehensive racial equity strategies inclusive of AAPI communities and participating in #GiveInMay, the nationwide giving campaign to support the work of AAPI nonprofits providing vital services - that you are also taking great care of yourselves.
While AAPIP has a domestic focus, we stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine who have been targets of apartheid, genocide, settler colonialism, and zionism. As such, in the same breath we say Eid Mubarak, we also say, #FreePalestine.
On Monday, May 24th, tune into Invisible Ink: AAPI News Representation & How Philanthropy Can Strengthen It, which AAPIP is hosting alongside Pew Research Center and Asian American Journalists Association. This webinar will present highlights from this new AAPIP report to help grantmakers, journalists, researchers, advocates, and others gain a pre-pandemic snapshot of how Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are portrayed in major newspapers and to what extent news media perpetuate the model minority narrative. The webinar will also feature new research from Pew Research Center about the diversity of the Asian American population in the United States, with data on key demographic, economic, educational, work, and population characteristics from the latest available U.S. Census Bureau data. Register for Invisible Ink.
Also make sure to tune into See Us Unite on Friday, May 21st at 8pm EDT. See Us Unite is a cultural campaign designed to accelerate impact and expand support for the AAPI community through solidarity and education. The campaign was created by a coalition of nonprofits including the newly launched Asian American Foundation (TAAF), the Ford Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, The Henry Luce Foundation and the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation in service of solidarity with the AAPI Community.
We also include a number of select events and resources in this newsletter you should definitely engage with.
In community,
The AAPIP Team

Monday, May 24th 9-10:30 am PT / 12-1:30 pm ET
News media plays a strong role in shaping the perceptions of philanthropists, policymakers and the general public, so it is critical to explore the media’s portrayal of different communities. The Hate Stops Here:
Addressing Anti-Asian Acts
Thursday, May 20th, 11-12:30pm PT / 2-3:30 pm ET
Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities have long endured xenophobia-fueled discrimination – nationally and in Colorado. The racist rhetoric and misinformation surrounding the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic fueled a modern, intensified wave of anti-Asian hate and violence. These acts pose a negative and lasting effect on individual and community health. Since the onslaught of COVID-19 in 2020, hate crimes against AAPIs have increased nearly 150%, and there have been 3,800 self-reported incidences of discrimination nationally.
This is unacceptable.
As we continue to explore what it will take to create a new, more equitable normal, join Karen McNeil-Miller, president and CEO of The Colorado Health Foundation on Thursday, May 20 (Noon – 1:30 p.m. MT) for a conversation about complexities within the AAPI communities and what we can all do to curb the rise of discrimination and support their health and well-being.

AAPI Organizing Briefing:
Moving Beyond Anti-Asian Violence
to Radical Collective Liberation
Friday, May 21st, 12-1pm PT / 3-4pm ET
The struggle for Asian American liberation has long been interwoven with struggles for liberation across multiple communities and identities. We are clear that calls to end violence cannot come without dismantling the very systems that perpetuate it such as state-sanctioned violence, American imperialism, anti-Blackness, and the upholding of the carceral state that punishes undocumented people and migrant and sex workers.
Please join us for a call featuring five visionary groups that powerfully organize at these intersections, on Friday, May 21st from 12 - 1 pm PT / 3 - 4 pm ET. We will learn about AAPI movement work, how supporting AAPI organizing leads to collective liberation, and what these organizers' visions of liberation look like.
This event is being hosted by Solidaire Network and co-sponsored by Donors of Color Network and Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy (AAPIP).
