HOME SWEET HOME UPDATE

Many thanks to our sponsors and donors! We have secured over $250,000 and counting through our fundraising efforts. Donor listing will be updated as we get additional donations here.

If you missed the telethon on the day of broadcast, please access the video from this link to our Home Sweet Home webpage. In addition to interviews of sponsors, donors, and volunteers, five videos are featured in the program: How We Miss Past APA Galas; APA Family Support Services (About); Trails Forever; APA’s Programs & Activities; and During Pandemic….

BACK TO SCHOOL

Students are heading back to in-person school after a year of sheltering in place. Schools in San Francisco are reopening in August and we are giving away backpacks & school supplies and distributing health information & resources on August 11, between 11 am – 2:30 pm. Clients can choose to pick up from our Excelsior, Visitacion Valley, or Chinatown/North Beach sites outdoors at appointed time slots.

A HEADSTART FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR

Each July our Summer Reading Group helps kids (ages 6-10) get ready for school. Fifteen students completed this eight-session program to learn reading, writing, and phonics. The children were organized in groups and supplied with course materials and books at various levels. Our instructor commented that “the students put in much effort with distance learning. They were engaged with the lessons and had fun. It is a real joy to see the happy learners on screen.”

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

A great turnout at the AAPI Care Fair... We were one of the eleven community-based organizations tabling at the Portsmouth Square event on June 26. This 3-hour fair was hosted by Soar Over Hate. Attendees watched self-defense demos, and some joined in a healing circle and guided meditation. There was a take-home plant workshop. Self-defense devices, hate crime reporting booklets, and other vital community resources were available.

APA's team of staff and client volunteers distributed personal protective supplies and flyers on our upcoming programs to over 200 people from the community who signed in at our table.

Promoting children's oral health. APA plays an active role in outreach activities as the facilitator for the Bayview-Hunters Point Children's Oral Health Taskforce.

We subcontract with Magic Tooth Bus (MTB) to coordinate sites/events for us to do presentations while they provide the dental screening with a dental provider.

In June, our Oral Health Taskforce coordinator provided an outdoor presentation to twelve children from Wu Yee Children Services Center in Bayview. Information was also shared with parents after the dental screening.

We teamed up with MTB to promote the importance of oral health to African American families at the Juneteenth celebration in Western Addition.

PROGRAMMING FOR OLDER ADULTS

We presented a 3-day Senior Workshop Series, in the early summer, for people 55 . This virtual workshop series consisted of a safety webinar presented by SF Safe on day one; a financial workshop & safety planning lesson presented by Comerica Bank on day two; and a tai chi and de-stress session on day three. We limited the workshops participants to a small number of seniors but plan to offer this again at a future date.

To Our Sponsors and Donors...

Heartfelt thanks to our Sustaining sponsor, Comerica Bank; our Title sponsor, Sutter Health CPMC; our Platinum level donors: Cathay Bank, Magenta, Inc., and Robert Joseph Louie Memorial Fund; and our many Gold, Silver, Copper, Bronze level donors, as well as our Friends, Patrons, and everyone who contributed to our causes during these challenging times.

Every dollar counts, and we are extremely grateful for the generosity!

We want to take this opportunity to thank the donors who responded to our Give In May campaign, hosted by Asian Pacific Fund and AAPI Data.

Special thanks to KTSF TV26: Mina Li, host of our Home Sweet Home telethon, and the Production Team.

Last but not least, gratitude and kudos to Gayle Chan, our volunteer fundraising chair, and all the volunteers involved in the telethon project.

Stay well,

Rick Yuen, Executive Director
