We did it!

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, over 70 children and youth graduated from our summer virtual programs.

Eight 5- and 6-year-olds gained skills on how to use their superhero powers and feel safe in our parent-child Superheroes class. Thirteen 6- to 13-year-olds learned phonics and improved their reading comprehension in our widely popular Summer Read and Learn Group. More than fifty youth from 9th to 12th grades received pre-employment training through the MYEEP Intern Program we hosted.

5 QUESTIONS  With Our New Board Member

Jennifer Ng MD has joined APA’s Board of Directors recently, in mid-2020, serving on the Program committee. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree, with honors, in Molecular and Cell Biology at UC Berkeley and Doctor of Medicine degree from New York Medical College. She completed her residency at California Pacific Medical Center in Internal Medicine.

Currently, Jennifer is a physician at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco. She works with 16 other bilingual physicians in the Adult and Family Medicine Department Chinese module that provides culturally sensitive care to over 20,000 monolingual Chinese patients in San Francisco.

Why did you join the Board? Why not? Serving the community that I belong to brings a great sense of fulfilment.

What do you appreciate about the services that APA provides?

I recognize the struggles of our Asian communities from my own upbringing and my medical practice. APA is an invaluable resource for those who are in need.

What would you like to see APA accomplish for the future?

Continue to provide critical social support services to our community in a culturally sensitive manner and bring awareness to disparities among different communities.

Tell us about your family?

My parents are from Hong Kong and they raised me in Hong Kong until I decided to go to college in the Bay Area. I have a younger sister who followed me to San Francisco a decade or so ago

What do you do in your leisure time?

During my free time I enjoy practicing yoga and going to museums. I also value spending time with my sister when there is an opportunity. We both have very busy work schedules.

Masking up for protection. Thanks for the donations!

A group of moms from Crosspoint Church of Silicon Valley, Milpitas donated over 200 child-size cloth face masks that they made for our clients. They started with donating to the medical staff at hospitals then extended to the underprivileged communities.

We have received a donation of 100 boxes of 3-ply disposable masks from National Pharmatek Corporation for our staff and volunteers. They need these PPEs when providing essential services: diaper distribution, food pantry, food drop offs at homes, distribution of needed supplies (health related, foods, school related) among APIFRN Partners as well as community members.

Get counted in the Census

Today (September 30) is the last day for responding to the 2020 Census. Hope you have already participated.

In partnership with SF Counts, OCEIA, and many community organizations, APA joined in the 2020 Census Week of Action to make sure all our community members are counted. Two of our staff were at the 9/25/2020 outreach event at Chinatown's Portsmouth Square to assist community members in completing the survey. Over 100 attended this event, the majority were seniors.

Do you know when the first census count was conducted? Click here to take the quiz. Learn about some interesting facts on the census history.
