HEALTHY & STRONG FAMILIES

What is a healthy or strong family? According to Christine Vander Wielen, MSW, LCSW, the characteristics of a healthy family are as follows:
1) Clear boundaries in the family. 2) Relationships within the family are seen as important. 3) Open communication among all family members. 4) Conflict is allowed. 5) Family members have an attitude of service toward one another and others.

Tom Westfall, who teaches parenting classes at Family Resource Center in Sterling, Colorado wrote in his journal-advocate.com column, "Healthy, happy, productive families don’t just happen. They are the product of hard work, intentional behavior, shared interests, common values and patience." He pointed out that, "In healthy families, seeking assistance is viewed as a strength rather than as a weakness....And when family support alone isn’t sufficient, healthy families seek outside help to assist them in moving forward."

First5sf.org: "Family well-being is children's well-being. When families aren't supported, children are at risk."

APA receives funding from San Francisco City and County to provide services to underserved communities as Family Resource Centers to strengthen and support the needs of families in the neighborhoods we are located in. Three times a year we offer a curriculum-based Positive Parenting course (in English, Chinese, and Spanish) to parents and caregivers. Prevention is better than cure, we strengthen families with a spectrum of services to avoid (and treat) problems that may occur as a result of stress, barriers, and challenges of language, finance, and lack of resources.

THANK YOU FOR DONATING TO OUR TOY DRIVE!

We have received toy donations from Family Giving Tree, Moms Against Poverty, and private holiday toy drive events. Support also came from our RightGift.com campaign and online donations. These gifts were distributed at our Chinatown, Visitacion Valley, and Excelsior family support centers.

5 QUESTIONS  With Our Board Member

Kory Lam

Kory joined APA's Board of Directors in mid-2017 and serves on the Fundraising committee. She plays an active role in helping APA secure in-kind donations for our annual Gala and silent auction.

Kory is currently a Vice President and Cluster Branch Manager responsible for HSBC’s retail branches in San Francisco. She began her career with HSBC in 2005 and held various positions throughout her career with HSBC Bank. Within her 14 years of service at HSBC, she has proven to be very successful at each position as she has won many annual individual awards. Upon finishing her secondary school in Hong Kong, Kory continued her education in the U.S. She has a B.S. degree from San Francisco State University, and a M.S. degree in Finance from Golden Gate University and currently holds Series 6, 63 and health/life Insurance licenses. She is a Board of Director of Hong Kong Association of Northern California and Vice President of Hong Kong Schools Alumni Association.

Why did you join the APA Board?

Like my fellow directors of the Board, I would like to give back to the community and be involved in a community agency with Asian clients.

What do you appreciate about the services that APA provides?

I appreciate APA's services that promote healthy families, and teach parenting skills towards the prevention of domestic violence and child abuse. Also, I appreciate the early and crisis intervention services when problems do occur.

What would you like to see APA accomplish for the future?

To be able to provide help and services to more families. Expand on the Behavioral Health program.

Tell us about your family?

My husband and I are parents to kindergarten-aged daughters who are twins. Our pet is a 16-year-old Pekingese dog.

What do you do in your leisure time?

I love traveling and spending quality time with my family.
